Mommy gripped my hand with sudden urgency. She leaned forward, and even in the darkness I could see the blank hollows of her eyes, empty, like a part of her wasn’t there. “You don’t need to look under your bed for monsters anymore,” she whispered.
Her voice was emotionless, cold. A thrill of fear ran up my spine and I struggled against her grasp, but she didn’t relent. “You know why?”
I shook my head.
“Because the monsters live inside us now.”
